Upper-level Social Studies Teacher Thomas Jefferson School
Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) seeks a full-time faculty member for the 2025–2025 academic year to teach AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Comparative Government and Politics, and one additional upper-level course in applied research principles. (Note that the government and politics courses are taught over one semester each while the two others are year-long courses.)
As a liberal-arts institution, TJ values individuals with talents and passions in more than one field; full-time faculty generally teach in more than one department. Preference may be given to candidates whose backgrounds include teaching English as well.
Standard faculty responsibilities include:
- Teaching: 3 or 4 year-long courses
- Advisory: Advising and monitoring the academic and social/emotional development of six to eight students across all grade levels and communicating regularly with their parents/guardians
- Boarding Program: Performing evening and/or weekend supervision on campus (approximately 30-40 hours of supervisory duties, plus 30 hours of on-call responsibilities, over the course of the school year)
- Coaching, Clubs, and/or Study Hall Supervision: Serving as an athletic coach, study-hall supervisor, and/or club adviser as assigned (experience or interest in a robotics club is a plus)
- School Trips: Sharing chaperoning duties for school-sponsored student trips in the fall
- School Community: Attending or participating in some school-organized activities—e.g., social, cultural, athletic, or clubs events
- Parents: Partnering with parents to communicate and educate about all things TJ, providing resources to help better support their child(ren)
The ideal candidate possesses strong skills and qualities in the following areas:
- Relevant educational background with versatile talents and passions in more than one discipline and area of school life;
- Teaching experience;
- Eagerness to forward the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging;
- Familiarity with applicable instructional practices, resources, and technologies;
- Commitment to continuous professional growth;
- Collegial spirit, positive outlook, a sense of humor, and willingness to fill in as needed to further the student experience;
- Genuine appreciation of both middle- and high-school students.
