Position Overview 

 

Community School is seeking a full-time permanent Upper Division Science Teacher to join our faculty beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, as we fulfill our mission of nurturing the gifts of mind, body and spirit. 

 

Founded in 1914, Community School is one of the premier independent schools in St. Louis. Known for its deeply personal and engaged approach to learning, the school enrolls approximately 350 students from age three through Sixth Grade. Our well-integrated, experiential curriculum is attentive to the whole child’s growth and development. The school’s 18-acre campus, which includes trails, fields, woods, and a pond, provides rich opportunities for outdoor learning and exploration. 

 

Community School classrooms average 20 students, supported by a co-teaching team of two full-time teachers per homeroom. Our curriculum emphasizes hands-on, joyful learning, problem-solving, character education, and public speaking. Our specialist instruction includes: science, physical education, music, art, woodworking, drama, and French.

 

Position Responsibilities 

 

The Upper Division Science Teacher will: 

  • Lead-teach science for grades 3-4 while receiving co-teacher support, and support the lead teacher for grades 5-6, using an inquiry-based and experiential approach. 

  • Design and implement engaging lessons that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of discovery. 

  • Assess student learning through both informal measures and formal reporting, providing meaningful feedback to students and families. 

  • Support students’ social-emotional growth and character development alongside their academic progress. 

  • Fulfill weekly arrival/dismissal, recess, and lunch duties, and contribute to a positive, safe school environment. 

  • Participate in faculty meetings, collaborative planning, professional learning opportunities, and admissions events.

  • Demonstrate deep content knowledge in science and apply best instructional practices to engage students in meaningful learning. 

  • Effectively instruct students individually, in small groups, and in whole-class settings, using varied and responsive teaching methods. 

  • Communicate and collaborate with warmth, clarity, and professionalism, contributing positively to the life of the school. 

  • Bring enthusiasm, curiosity, and a passion for nurturing the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. Build meaningful relationships with students, families, and colleagues, showing respect for diversity in all its forms and fostering an inclusive community. 

  • Comfortably use technology to support instruction, assessment, and communication.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or a related field required. 

  • Master’s degree preferred. 

  • Minimum of three years teaching experience preferred. 

  • Familiarity with the Responsive Classroom approach is a plus.
