Summary of Position
City Academy is seeking a full-time School Counselor to join our Student Support team for the 2025-2026 school year. This role is essential in fostering the emotional well-being of our students, providing individual counseling, group workshops, and crisis intervention. The Counselor will work closely with faculty, staff, and families to support student mental health, develop co-curricular programming, and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Responsibilities

Student Mental Health Support:

  • Provide individual counseling and small group counseling.
  • Develop and implement structured social-emotional learning (SEL) programming that aligns with the Responsive Classroom philosophy to help students build resilience, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Develop and lead co-curricular programming for students age three - 6th grade with an emphasis on social emotional wellbeing.
  • Develop systems for gathering student behavioral data for the purpose of identifying need for support as well as individual progress?
  • Collaborate with outside providers to support continuing care for students in emergency situations, working collaboratively with parents, faculty.
  • Identify and maintain relationships with local resources for referrals and consultations.
  • Serve as a member of the school’s Care Team, assisting with crisis assessment and intervention.
  • Aid in implementation and support of the school-wide used Zones of Regulation to promote emotional awareness and self-regulation. Also, support the CARES approach, which is a part of the Responsive Classroom framework, to foster collaboration, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self control. 

Executive Functioning Skills Support:

  • Support school-wide executive function development addressing growth in the areas of: organization, time management, task initiation, and conflict resolution. 
  • Develop and implement appropriate, data driven interventions for students facing challenges with focus, self-regulation, and work completion. 
  • Collaborate with teachers to create strategies that support students with executive function challenges in the classroom.
  • Conduct classroom guidance lessons on topics such as emotional regulation, study skills, and conflict resolution.

Faculty & Staff Support:

  • Support faculty and staff with the identification of and strategies to address the emotional needs of students.
  • Provide resources and training to faculty and staff related to student mental health and well-being.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, faculty  and administrators regarding students’ social-emotional well-being, offering support and resources when needed.
  • Maintain updated knowledge and training regarding mandated reporter laws and responsibilities within the State of Missouri.

  • School Community Engagement:
  • Serve on committees that advance student health, wellness, and safety.
  • Promote inclusivity and cultural awareness in all interactions with students and families.

Qualifications

Education & Certification:

  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, School Psychology, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
  • Holds or will soon be eligible (with own supervisor) for professional licensure (e.g., LCSW, LMSW, LPC, PLPC) or DESE certification.

Experience & Skills:

  • Experience working as a school counselor.
  • Strong knowledge of crisis assessment and intervention strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in student support services.
  • Ability to develop and lead co-curricular programming for students age three - 6th grade.
