School Counselor Thomas Jefferson School
Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) seeks a full-time school counselor for the 2025–2026 school year to promote the emotional wellbeing of the community by providing counseling services to students and developing and delivering social-emotional programming for students, parents, and colleagues. The school counselor will be uniquely positioned to shape and advance a school culture that recognizes mental health and a strong sense of belonging as essential to students’ ability to learn.
The school counselor will report to the Associate Head of School.
Counselor responsibilities would include but are not limited to:
- providing individual mental health counseling and group workshops to students;
- developing and leading co-curricular programming for students grades 7–12;
- serving as a member of the school’s Crisis Team, assisting with crisis assessment and intervention;
- being available for emergency calls from faculty and staff when a student is in crisis (including nights and weekends);
- serving on committees that advance student health, wellness, and safety;
- overseeing continuing care for students in collaboration with parents, faculty and staff members, and outside providers;
- supporting and educating faculty and staff in identifying and addressing emotional needs of students;
- maintaining updated knowledge and training regarding mandated reporter laws and responsibilities within the State of Missouri;
- identifying and maintaining relationships with local resources for referrals and consultations.
- participating in the duty and on-call rotation (nights and weekends);
The ideal candidate possesses qualifications, skills, and qualities in the following areas:
- Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, School Psychology, Educational Psychology or related field and holds or will soon be eligible (with own supervisor) for professional licensure (e.g., LCSW, LMSW, LPC, PLPC) or DESE certification
- school counseling experience;
- excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- eagerness to forward the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- commitment to continuous professional growth;
- collegial spirit, positive outlook, a sense of humor, and willingness to fill in as needed to further the student experience;
- genuine appreciation of both middle- and high-school students.
