Part-time School Nurse Thomas Jefferson School

Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) seeks a part-time school nurse to serve as a long-term substitute from early August to mid-December 2025. The school nurse performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the management and supervision of student health and safety.

The school nurse will report to the Associate Head of School.

Nurse responsibilities would include but are not limited to: 

Student Care

  • Monitors care for on-going health issues of resident students and communicates with parents, staff, and students as needed
  • Provide on-site emergency and general healthcare to students weekdays 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
  • Manages all prescription and over-the-counter medications for students, including documentation of administration
  • Is available for consultation by telephone for after-hours medical needs of boarding students, within reason
  • Checks on resident students who have not reported for breakfast
  • Ascertains reason for absence and determines course of action, including treatment and care schedules for sick or injured students and communication with kitchen staff regarding meals. 
  • Notifies the school office and other relevant personnel of absent students’ status.
  • Schedules and accompanies resident students to medical appointments or care facilities as necessary

Teaching

  • Design and implement developmentally-appropriate health and wellness programming for students in grades 7–12. Potential topics of focus include, but are not limited to: physical and mental health, social-emotional learning, communication.

Administrative

  • Collects, reviews, and organizes all medical forms and health-related documents
  • Maintains student records and incident reports within the student information system 
  • Creates and implements health-related forms, policies, and procedures
  • Coordinates annual administration of flu shots (for students and employees), other vaccinations, and staff CPR training
  • Serves as liaison between school personnel, families, healthcare providers, and the health department
  • Oversees health protocols and screening, evaluates symptoms, implements isolation/quarantine procedures
  • Files annual compliance reports with the state and/or local authorities
  • Advises faculty and staff on management of student health matters and schedules training as needed (first aid, blood-borne pathogens, CPR, etc.)

General            

  • Assists with crisis management as needed 
  • Manages all medical supplies on campus
  • Arranges for coverage of duties when absent, in consultation with supervisor
  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school related information                     
  • Represents and supports the school, its mission, and its leadership in a positive manner
  • Seeks ways to forward the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by and in support of the Head of School

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and licensure as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Missouri;

The School Nurse is non-exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. This means that they are entitled to receive hourly wages that are governed by the wage and hour laws.
