Position Overview 

New City School seeks a creative and nurturing part-time Art Teacher who will be responsible for teaching art to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, and responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art. Candidates should have successful teaching experience at the elementary school levels. 

The position requires maintaining a part-time teaching load of students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Our schedule is on a 5 day rotation; 5th and 6th grade classes will meet 4 of the 5 days from 8:50-9:50am and 4th grade classes will meet from 1:20-2:10pm on 2 of the 5 days. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of child development, progressive pedagogy, an understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; a growth-oriented mindset; and a spirit of collaboration and joyful learning. A bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required; a Masters and teaching certificate or credential is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience is also preferred. In addition, an understanding of the Responsive Classroom approach is desired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Design and teach engaging art lessons in grades 4-6 that encompass a variety of artistic concepts and techniques including: drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, color theory, perspective, composition, and mixed media
  • Create a positive, nurturing classroom environment where students feel comfortable developing and expressing themselves through art
  • Foster creativity and self-expression by encouraging students to explore different styles and materials and introducing them to a diversity of artists
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate art into other subject areas, reinforcing concepts across the curriculum
  • Assess and give feedback on student progress informally and through progress reports to promote skill development and artistic growth 
  • Stay current with developments in art education and implement new ideas, techniques, and technologies to enrich the art curriculum
  • Continue to develop the art program and curriculum in grades 4-6 so that students are engaged in a range of projects that align with the Project Based Learning approach
  • Help maintain the art gallery and art displays throughout the school using both students’ work and outside artists for students in grades 4-6
  • Effectively interact with a diverse population of students, families and faculty and exhibit a deep appreciation and understanding of diversity in all its forms
  • Effectively articulate the principles of inclusion, equity and justice, both in the classroom and beyond
  • Display strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents 
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Display a passion for teaching and nurturing the whole child
  • Show a commitment to professional learning and growth 
  • Exhibit strong professional skills including discretion, judgment and integrity 
  • Comfortable with technology

Start Date: August 2025 with possible professional development opportunities in the summer.
