Long Term Substitute Middle School Math Teacher The Whitfield School
The Whitfield School, an innovative educational institution for grades 6-12, is looking for a Middle School math teacher passionate about introducing foundational concepts to its youngest learners. Ideal candidates are collaborative professionals who embrace daily opportunities to learn from colleagues, foster an equitable and inclusive environment for a diverse student body, and consistently apply research-based best practices in the classroom. This position will begin in February 2025 and will conclude in approximately four to six weeks; start and end date to be determined.
The Whitfield Mathematics Department provides a strong foundation in mathematics through challenging courses that are appropriate to the ages, abilities, and needs of our students. At all levels, students learn to work collaboratively as well as on their own. The Middle School curriculum covers a wide range of topics, starting from foundational operations on and manipulation of real numbers through algebra and geometry concepts. In all courses, emphasis is placed on collaboration, problem-solving, computational thinking, and clearly communicating mathematical ideas and concepts.
Typical responsibilities include the following:

Teach five sections of middle school math

Serve as an advisor to approximately 12 middle school students

Meet with students during “Academic Lab” time to provide additional support, individualized feedback, and opportunities for extension

Work with departmental peers to collaborate on curricular design and project-based learning experiences

Collaborate with grade level team to foster a community of kindness, trust, and belonging
-
Work professionally and cooperatively within the department, the School, and the broader Whitfield community
In addition to demonstrating a passion for working with middle school students, the strongest candidates will have the following qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or related degree

Two to three years of experience helping middle school students build confidence and foundational skills (starting from foundational operations on and manipulation of real numbers through algebra and geometry concepts)

Background in and commitment to supporting the cognitive and social-emotional growth of early adolescence
-
Background in and commitment to culturally responsive teaching
-
Experience designing and facilitating collaborative, student-centered experiences in and around the classroom
-
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities
-
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues
-
A strong desire to participate in the whole life of the school

Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
