Kindergarten - 4th Grade Science Specialist New City School
New City School seeks an inspiring and dedicated teacher to teach science to students in Kindergarten through 4th Grade through meaningful learning opportunities grounded in inquiry, experiments, and a learner-centered approach. In addition, the K-4 Science Specialist leads science field trips and camping trips, in addition to utilizing and maintaining our outdoor garden spaces and chickens. The position requires maintaining a full teaching load, weekly recess duties, and attending professional meetings. A bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required; a master’s degree and teaching certificate or credential is preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience is also preferred, as is a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and child-centered education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Engage students in science inquiry to encourage students to think scientifically: predict, question, problem solve, make connections, be creative and open-minded, use evidence to evaluate a claim, and draw conclusions to develop their understanding of science concepts

Design curriculum to develop conceptual understanding and allow students to build connections between science concepts, as well as between other disciplines

Work in partnership with the 5th and 6th Grade Science Specialist to ensure a progression of curriculum

Is excited and passionate about outdoor learning, including leading the Garden Committee, initiating and leading outdoor learning field trips, and attending the 4th Grade overnight camping trip

Use formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and iterate lessons

Create a learning environment that facilitates collaboration, compassion for others and independence

Effectively instruct students individually and in small/whole group settings, utilizing various teaching methods including the Multiple Intelligences approach

Effectively interact with a diverse population of students, families and faculty and exhibit a deep appreciation and understanding of diversity in all its forms

Effectively articulate the principles of inclusion, equity, and justice, both in the classroom and beyond

Display strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents, particularly surrounding curriculum and interdisciplinary projects with homeroom teachers and other specialists

Start Date: August 2026 with possible professional development opportunities in the summer.
