Opportunity Description:
John Burroughs seeks a supportive and collaborative leader to join its administration as the Employee Experience Manager. This role reports directly to the CFO, and will lead the operational management of our most valuable resource—our faculty and staff.
The Manager oversees the full employee lifecycle, ensuring that all people-processes are built and rolled out with a deep commitment to the school’s mission of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and engagement. This role requires an architect’s mindset to develop systems from scratch while navigating complex questions of equity. The ideal candidate brings a collaborative spirit and a deep commitment to community along with the vision to grow the school’s personnel function through thoughtful, mission-aligned innovation. In addition to their core responsibilities, the Employee Experience Manager will be a partner with the Business Office, ensuring compliance with Missouri state and federal laws, providing support in payroll and benefit management functions, and maintaining accurate employment data for reporting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Talent Pipeline
● Support the hiring process for faculty and staff openings, including posting jobs, screening candidates, and scheduling interviews.
● Execute a structured onboarding process that covers safety training, benefits setup, and cultural integration. Support individuals with key roles in onboarding.
2. Compliance, Contracts & Risk Management
● Assist in the issuance and compliance of faculty employment agreements and staff offer letters; track duties and responsibilities data in support of workload audits.
● Ensure regulatory compliance in all employment agreements. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Missouri labor laws; ensure the Employee Handbook is reviewed annually to mitigate legal risk.
● Administer the background check process; facilitate training and education in relevant student safety and employment best practice areas.
● Maintain employee handbooks and policies, ensuring employee education and compliance.
● Manage all Workers Compensation claims, working to minimize risk and premiums.
3. Employee Experience
● Cultivate a positive community culture
● Support Professional Development programs and goals for all faculty and staff, in close partnership with the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs.
● Address employee concerns; facilitate conflict resolution among faculty & staff. Serve as a support and resource for employees. Coach and advise department heads in supporting faculty in fulfilling professional expectations.
● Support Department Heads and Managers in various HR administrative responsibilities.
4. Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity & Engagement
● Carry out all key responsibilities equitably, with cultural competency, and in a way that serves all employees and their diverse identities and cultural backgrounds.
● Help promote an employee culture where all feel a sense of belonging.
● Attract, retain, and support a diverse faculty and staff.
● Collaborate with the Office of DEIE.
Qualifications
● Education: Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related experience. HR Certification preferred, or a willingness to work towards certification in the first year of employment.
● Experience: 5-10 years of Human Resource or related experience. (Experience in a "Department of One" or small team environment is a plus).
● Technical Skills: Proficiency with HR Management systems and strong Excel skills for reporting.
● Core Competencies:
○ Detail-Oriented: Ability to manage contract dates and compliance deadlines with ease.
○ Discretion: Absolute integrity in handling sensitive salary and personnel data.
○ Operational Mindset: An understanding of how HR decisions impact the school's budget and bottom line.
