Director of Security
The Director of Security will be responsible for the safety and security of The Whitfield School’s campus, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors as well as safeguarding the School’s property, building, and grounds. This individual will oversee daily security operations, supervise a team of security staff, and ensure that security protocols and emergency procedures are followed to maintain a safe environment on campus. The Director of Security will also collaborate closely with the administration, faculty, and external agencies to develop and implement safety measures and security initiatives. The Director of Security reports to the Director of Finance & Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Campus Security Operations

  • Oversee the security and safety of the campus facilities, ensuring the safety of all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain security policies, procedures, and protocols to respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Monitor security systems, including cameras, alarms, and access controls, ensuring they are operational and effective.
  • Conduct regular campus security patrols and audits to identify potential security risks and vulnerabilities.
  • Direct traffic flow during morning drop-off.
  • Manage the inventory, distribution, and collection of campus keys.

Staff Management and Oversight

  • Hire, supervise and schedule security personnel, including evening and weekend security staff.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels for after-hours security coverage, including weekends and holidays.
  • Provide training and development for all security staff on safety protocols, emergency procedures, and conflict resolution.
  • Manage security staff schedules and performance evaluations.

Safety and Emergency Response

  • Serve as the primary contact for emergency response situations, including medical emergencies, fire drills, and security incidents.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire department, and emergency services as needed.
  • Lead campus-wide drills (fire, earthquake, tornado, lockdown, and intruder) and training for students, faculty, and staff on emergency preparedness and response protocols.
  • Investigate and report incidents involving security breaches, accidents, or other emergencies.
  • Maintain and update the Crisis Manual provided to all faculty and staff.

Collaboration and Reporting

  • Work closely with the Director of Finance & Operations, faculty, and administrators to assess security needs and develop strategies to address them.
  • Foster a safe and inclusive environment by building strong relationships with students, staff, and families from diverse backgrounds, ensuring security policies are equitable and culturally responsive.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with local police and fire department personnel.

  • Assist the Director of Finance & Operations in leading the Safety & Security Task Force.
  • Provide regular reports and updates on security-related issues, incidents, and security audits.
  • Maintain records of security incidents, safety reports, and security audits for internal use and compliance.
  • Act as the liaison for external security consultants, law enforcement, and regulatory agencies.

Security Systems Management

  • Ensure proper functioning of all campus security systems, including access control, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems.
  • Collaborate with IT and facilities departments to maintain and improve security technology and infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in security management, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a security leadership role, preferably in a school or similar educational environment.
  • Maintain law enforcement-level weapons training and participate in annual recertification training.
  • Strong knowledge of security systems, emergency protocols, and best practices in physical security management.
  • Experience managing and supervising security personnel.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations.
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and/or other relevant safety certifications preferred.
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and patrol the campus and respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 30 lbs. without assistance.
