Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) seeks a strategic, relationship-driven Director of Enrollment to lead the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of mission-appropriate students, with a particular focus on growing the boarding program. TJ is a small, coeducational day and boarding school for grades 7–12, known for its rigorous liberal-arts curriculum, college-like atmosphere, and remarkably diverse, international community. As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Enrollment works closely with the Head of School to establish and execute multi-year enrollment strategies aligned with TJ’s mission and growth goals. The Director will also communicate enrollment strategy and results clearly to senior leadership and the Board. The Director will coordinate the full enrollment pipeline—marketing, outreach, admissions, yield, and retention—and will provide strategic leadership on enrollment marketing, messaging, and market positioning, partnering with the Communications Coordinator and Admissions/Development support staff to ensure a coherent, data-informed approach. This includes particular responsibility for strengthening TJ’s domestic and international recruitment pipelines, especially in support of the boarding program. This position requires a warm, polished presence; excellent judgment; and the ability to represent the School in local, regional, and international markets.
Desired Background and Qualities
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Experience in admissions or enrollment management at the secondary or college level; preference for candidates with boarding-school or international recruitment experience
- Deep understanding of independent schools and the unique rhythms of boarding-school life
- Excellent communication skills; the ability to articulate TJ’s mission and impact with clarity and authenticity and to build trust with students, families, faculty, and external partners
- Strong organizational ability, attention to detail, and comfort managing multiple complex processes
- Facility with relevant technologies (e.g., Google Workspace, CRMs, email marketing platforms, Blackbaud) and willingness to learn new systems
- Experience developing or executing enrollment growth strategies, market positioning, or new recruitment initiatives
- Financial and analytical acuity, including the ability to use data to shape strategy, inform financial aid and net tuition decisions, and measure outcomes
- Commitment to high-touch customer service, timely follow-through, and careful record-keeping
- Cultural fluency, empathy, and sensitivity to linguistic and cultural differences among families including experience working with international students, families, and educational systems
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, coordinating part-time support staff and a faculty admissions committee, and mobilizing the wider School community in support of enrollment and retention
- Collegial spirit, positive outlook, integrity, and sense of humor
- Genuine appreciation for adolescents and respect for the needs and concerns of parents
