Adjunct Theatre Specialist Thomas Jefferson School
Thomas Jefferson School (TJ) seeks an adjunct theatre specialist for the 2025–2026 school year to lead both the curricular and extra-curricular aspects of our performing arts program. This part-time role involves teaching drama courses, scenic design, and technical direction, as well as directing middle- and high-school theatrical productions. The ideal candidate will be passionate about theatre education and have a strong background in both performance and technical theatre.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching drama and theatre courses to middle- and high-school students, focusing on acting, stage presence, and theatrical techniques: 1 year-long middle-school course, which culminates in a performance in the spring; and 2 semester-long high-school courses in theatre, to be determined in consultation with the Chair of the Arts Department and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
- Instructing students in scenic design and technical theatre, including set construction, lighting, sound, and stage management.
- Overseeing the design, build, and execution of scenic elements for school productions.
- Directing both the middle- and high-school theatrical productions (one in the fall and one in the spring), overseeing play selection, auditions, rehearsals, and performances.
- Supervising and mentoring students in both onstage and backstage roles, fostering creativity and teamwork.
- Managing performance spaces, equipment, and technical resources, ensuring safe and efficient use.
- Communicating assignments and expectations in a timely manner via MyTJS, our online learning-management system.
- Assessing student work according to communicated expectations and maintaining an electronic gradebook in MyTJS.
- Drafting personalized end-of-quarter comments for each student that reflect on their progress and highlight opportunities for continued growth.
- Attendance at faculty and staff meetings, as needed.

- Relevant educational background with versatile talents and passions;
- Experience in theatre education, directing, and technical theatre;
- Strong knowledge of scenic design, set construction, lighting, and sound production;
- Ability to work with students of varying skill levels and to foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate rehearsals and performances;

- Familiarity with applicable instructional practices, resources, and technologies;
