Overview
New City School, a leading, progressive independent school for approximately 340 students ages three - 6th Grade, seeks an inspiring and dedicated 4th Grade teacher. Grade-level teams collaborate closely, planning instruction and memorable grade-level experiences together. Classes have approximately 13-15 students. To complement the 4th Grade program, students also receive instruction from specialists in music, visual arts, science, Spanish, library, performing arts, bodily-kinesthetic, and technology.
We are seeking a joyful, creative, and thoughtful practitioner to join our 4th Grade team, beginning in August 2026. The position requires maintaining a full teaching load, weekly recess and lunch duties, writing narrative progress reports twice a year and regular family newsletters, and attending weekly professional meetings. There also is a one-night overnight camping experience and an evening class performance. A bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required; a master’s degree and teaching certificate or credential is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience is preferred.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of child development, progressive pedagogy, and educational research; an understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; a growth-oriented mindset; and a spirit of collaboration and joyful learning. In addition, an understanding of the Responsive Classroom approach is desired.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Display a passion for teaching and nurturing the whole child
- Connect with a diverse population of students, families, and faculty; exhibit a deep appreciation and understanding of diversity in all its forms
- Effectively articulate the principles of inclusion, equity, and justice, both in the classroom and beyond
- Base instruction on a solid understanding of childhood development; create a learning environment that facilitates collaboration, compassion for others, and independence
- Design curriculum to develop student understanding; utilize formative and summative assessments to inform instruction and adapt lessons
- Instruct students individually and in small-/whole-group settings through a workshop approach, utilizing various teaching methods including the multiple intelligences approach
- Appreciate and have interest in outdoor learning and education
- Enjoy being part of a team, learning from and teaching others
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Show a strong commitment to professional learning and growth; embrace making mistakes and use those mistakes to grow
- Exhibit strong professional skills including discretion, judgment, and integrity
- Be technologically savvy
Start Date: August 2026 with possible professional development opportunities in the summer
