Performing Arts Teacher New City School

Overview:
New City School is a progressive independent school in St. Louis serving approximately 345 students, ages 3 through 6th grade. We believe there are “so many ways to be smart,” and our teachers design interdisciplinary, hands-on learning experiences in which children are engaged. Faculty collaborate closely across grade levels and disciplines to create meaningful learning. Classes are small and have approximately 12 - 15 students. To complement each grade level’s program, students receive instruction from specialists in music, visual arts, science, Spanish, library, bodily-kinesthetic, and technology.  We are seeking a joyful, creative, and thoughtful practitioner to join our collaborative specialist team, beginning in August 2026. A bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required; a master’s degree and teaching certificate or credential is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience is also required. Primary Responsibilities:

• Teach K–6 performing arts classes (50-minute blocks in a 6-day rotation)

• Design and deliver a curriculum including acting, improv, movement/dance, vocal performance, technical theater, production processes, and circus skills

• Foster an inclusive, engaging environment that supports creativity and self-expression

• Use assessment to inform instruction and support student growth

Production Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with grade-level teams to support grade specific student productions

• Teach performance and technical skills during class and rehearsal sessions

• Provide technical and artistic support (e.g., lighting, sound, sets, costumes, choreography, directing)

• Attend rehearsals and performances, which includes several evening commitments throughout the year

• Serve as the technical lead for school performances

Program Leadership:

• Manage and maintain theater space and equipment, including microphones, technical equipment, sound board, and other technology 

• Support assemblies, events, and student performances

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts or related field required; master’s preferred

• Minimum of 3 years teaching experience with elementary-aged students

• Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills

• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

• Passion for working with children and supporting the whole child

Start Date: August 2026
