Overview
New City School, a leading, progressive independent school for approximately 350 students ages three - 6th Grade, seeks an inspiring and dedicated 4/5s teacher. Grade level teams collaborate closely, planning instruction and memorable grade level experiences together. Each 4/5 class has approximately 13 - 14 students and is supported by an assistant teacher in each class. To complement the 4/5s program, students also receive instruction from specialists in music and movement, library, art, and counselor-led lessons.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of early childhood development and progressive pedagogy; an understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; a growth-oriented mindset; and a spirit of collaboration and joyful learning. In addition, an understanding of the Responsive Classroom approach is desired. A bachelor's degree in Elementary or Early Education or a related field is required; a master’s degree and teaching certificate or credential is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience is also preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Display a passion for teaching and nurturing the whole child
- Connect and interact with a diverse population of students, families and faculty and exhibit a deep appreciation and understanding of diversity in all its forms
- Teach children based on a solid understanding of early childhood development, while teaming with the other 4/5 teachers
- Use formative assessment to inform instruction and iterate lessons
- Create a learning environment that facilitates collaboration, compassion for others and independence
- Instruct using a workshop approach; instruct students individually and in small/whole group settings, utilizing an inquiry-based approach, multiple intelligences, and various teaching methods
- Communicate comfortably with caregivers through email, written progress reports, and conferences
- Display strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents
- Engage in ongoing curriculum development and curriculum design
- Articulate the principles of inclusion, equity and justice, both in the classroom and beyond
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Show a strong commitment to professional learning and growth
- Exhibit strong professional skills including discretion, judgment and integrity
- Invest in the life of the school by participating in collaborative planning sessions with grade level teammates, weekly staff meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings
- Be technologically savvy in using google apps
Start Date: August 2026 with possible professional development opportunities in the summer.
