The pandemic brought new challenges to the parent-teacher relationship. Many parents were grateful for the school’s efforts. But some began sitting in on their children’s Zoom classes and tried to become intermediaries between their children and teachers; others fought masking and quarantine rules; still others broke school guidelines and lied about what they were doing.

In truth, these changes are not entirely new; they are an intensification of longstanding trends among parents towards greater anxiety about their children and a more consumerist-transactional approach to the school. How can educators reset their relationships with parents?

Drawing on the new book he co-wrote with Michael Thompson, Hopes and Fears: Working with Today’s Independent School Parents, Rob Evans will outline the causes and consequences of these changes and offer practical ways teachers and administrators can hold their ground and strengthen their relationships with parents.

Rob is a psychologist and school consultant. A former teacher and a longtime child and family therapist, he has worked in more than 700 independent schools, including many ISSL members.
